A daring new American clown duo tackles oppression – yes, all of it – through the power of theatre. Ethan & Gigi Present: THE MOVEMENT makes its Edinburgh Fringe debut August 05-30.

The show follows Ethan & Gigi, two overconfident artists who believe themselves to be revolutionary leaders, as they attempt to liberate the masses one show at a time. What ensues is equal parts chaos, failure, and spectacle – a testament to the power of imagination and our sometimes imperfect attempts to dream of a better world. Acclaimed clown and performer Riley Soloner says, “THE MOVEMENT is timely, audacious and deeply stupid (complimentary).”

Rising stars within the New York City clown scene, the duo Ethan & Gigi have captured the hearts and minds of audiences. Comedy legend Chris Gethard says “These kids are funny, brave, some of the hardest workers I’ve ever met, and also might be legitimately unwell in a mental sense, I’m not certain. Either way, huge fan.” Aitor Basauri, of U.K.’s leading physical comedy ensemble Spymonkey, is also a fan and mentor of Ethan & Gigi’s, having consulted on and contributed to THE MOVEMENT. “In the times we live in,” Basauri says, “Laughter isn’t innocent. The act of laughing has become an act of resistance against power structures that don’t have a sense of humor about themselves.”

“The show itself is about revolution, but was also devised in an ‘It takes a village’ sort of way,” says Gigi. “Revolution is a big, big dream and we had to involve a lot of people to develop this show – our mentors, teachers, and friends. It’s a microcosmic example of a better world, a result of communal efforts driven by passion and not profit.” Ethan adds, “But please do buy tickets and see the show. Revolution can’t happen without you!”

The two are known for dreaming in big and dangerous ways, a signature of their self-described ethos and genre of clowning: AGITFLOP. Once, they marched a sold out Upright Citizens Brigade through the streets of New York City to Union Square, where they performed in front of a rented LED truck. On the 24th anniversary of September 11th, they performed THE MOVEMENT to a sold out crowd at famed Off-Broadway’s SoHo Playhouse, successfully pulling off their dream of doing “America’s First Good 9/11.”

THE MOVEMENT comes to Edinburgh to unite the idiocy of the clown with the fervor of the insurgent. Through the power of theatre, Ethan and Gigi invite audiences to step into the role of a lifetime…that of a revolutionary. In reference to why people should see THE MOVEMENT versus other Fringe shows, Ethan shares, “You may go to a show to laugh, but we aren’t here to just make people laugh,” Gigi adds, “We’re here to make people free.” THE MOVEMENT is written and performed by Ethan & Gigi and directed with Iris McCloughan.
